Description
The Plough is a public house located on Market Lane in Blundeston, dated 1701, as indicated by iron ties marked 'D' over 'EB'. The building has undergone significant alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features stucco on brick, designed to imitate ashlar, with rusticated quoins and a pantiled roof. The structure is two stories high with a three-bay facade. The first floor has 19th-century flush-frame sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has 20th-century square-leaded cross windows; all windows are framed with moulded architraves. The entrance includes a 20th-century door with a plain rectangular fanlight and a doorcase that has pilasters and a bracketed cornice. Above the doorway is a modern panel, which was once a window, noting that Barkis the carrier from Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield" started from this location. The building also has gable stacks, and to the right, there is a single-storey range currently used for storage and garaging. The Plough is listed due to its association with Dickens.
