Description

Blundeston House is a house built between 1785 and 1786 by Sir John Soane for Nathaniel Rix, with 19th century alterations and additions. The building is made of colourwashed red brick and features a paired bracketed eaves cornice and a hipped slated roof. It stands three storeys tall and has a narrow three-bay entrance front facing southwest. The entrance includes a Greek Doric porch, likely added in the early 19th century, with a three-quarter glazed double door and panelled reveals, accessed by a short flight of steps.

On the ground floor, there are two semi-circular arched windows (later casements) and three narrow inset sash windows on the first floor, with a single square sash window on the second floor. The main front has a three-bay layout with a full-height central gabled wing that was originally single storey, indicating careful alteration. The ground floor features tripartite sash windows, and to the left, the angle between the wings is filled by a 19th century conservatory.

At the rear, there is a central recess from which a two-storey kitchen wing projects, featuring a Diocletian window at the second floor level. This wing has undergone alterations and includes later additions. There are two 19th century rectangular stacks made of white brick with grouped flues. Inside, the well stair has stick balusters, a ramped and wreathed handrail, and carved tread-ends. The drawing room showcases a plaster cornice with a key fret ceiling border and an original marble fireplace with corner roundels.
