Description
South Lodge and Gates of Somerleyton Hall is a lodge and gateway built around 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and features a slated roof, with most of the slates arranged in a fishscale pattern. It stands at one and a half storeys high and has four projecting wings, each topped with a shaped gable. The windows are casement style, and on the road side, there is a four-light canted bay window made of stone. The wing that faces the gateway projects slightly and includes a six-panel entrance door. A central axial stack has a cruciform group of flues. To the west, there are convex walls made of brick and stone, approximately 2 meters high, with some sections that are pierced. The stone gate piers feature pierced strapwork and are topped with embellished coats of arms, along with a wrought iron gate.
