Description

SOMERLEYTON SOMERLEYTON PARK TM 49 NE 4/56 Boundary walling to formal gardens of Somerleyton Hall GV II Retaining boundary wall of the formal gardens to the west of Somerleyton Hall. Circa 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. Retaining section to Park red brick, otherwise stone. Circa lm high to the gardens. Both pierced and solid sections, with square piers, some surmounted by urns. At the south east corner are 2 stone benches: the one in the north return of the wall has a circular back panel carved with a basket of fruit and flowers and was originally flanked by a pair of bronze vases now on the terrace retaining wall (Item 4/55). The bench at the south end of the terrace has a back carved with swans, and terminal vases supported by 4 storks. At the south west corner, framing the vista down the Lime avenue, 2 Portland stone statues by Thomas: 'The Hunter Restraining his Dogs' and 'The Death of the Red Deer'. On the north side opposite, 2 piers with tall tapering finials crowned by small urns (one pier included with the continuation of this walling on the north side of the gardens under Item 4/57). Forms part of a garden included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
