Description

SOMERLEYTON SOMERLEYTON PARK TM 49 NE 4/55 Retaining wall of terrace to garden front of Somerleyton Hall GV II Retaining wall of the terrace along the garden front of Somerleyton Hall. Circa 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. Stone; raised rectangular panels with vermiculated rustication. 3 flights of steps down to the formal gardens, in line with the centre and end bays of the house. At the base of the steps are low piers surmounted by urns. At each end the wall is curved forward, each curve terminating in a reclining female figure in marble, representing Night (to the south) and Day; they are signed 'John Thomas London'. To each side of the centre steps are fine antique bronze vases with dragon handles and patterns in deep relief; these were formerly part of a bench feature within the garden walling to the south of the house (see Item 4/56). Forms part of a garden included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
