Description
Stable court to Somerleyton Hall, dated 1846 on rainwater heads, was designed by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. It is built of red brick with stone dressings and has slated roofs, showcasing a Jacobean style. The building is mainly two storeys high. At the south end, there is an entrance block featuring a semi-circular headed archway and a square clock tower above. The clock tower has clock faces on all four sides, with pierced angle turrets capped by obelisk finials in between. Above this, an octagonal bell tower has strapwork-traceried openings and a domed cupola with a scaled roof, topped with a finial and wind vane. The clock was made by Vulliamy. There are two similar ranges of coach houses and stabling with living accommodation above, both featuring shaped gables. Attached to the north is a lower enclosing block that matches the style. The east range has four slightly recessed semi-circular arches on the ground floor, with stone panelling in the tympana; one arch contains a doorway. A taller and narrower arch in the centre gable has a window, and there are three first floor windows, one of which is circular. The courtyard openings remain largely unaltered. The surrounding park and gardens are included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
