Description
The screen wall and entrance gates to Somerleyton Hall were built around 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. The structure is primarily made of stone, with some red brick, and stands approximately 3 meters high. The upper part of the wall is pierced, and the center section curves forward to form the gateway. At each end of the curved sections, there are square wall piers topped with urns. The central gateway features heavy rusticated piers, each pierced by an arched pedestrian side entrance with a wrought iron gate. The piers are adorned with couchant stags that face each other across the entrance; these were renewed in 1975. The main gates are made of wrought iron. At both ends of the wall, square piers are crowned by bronze lamps supported by four winged lions, connecting the wall to the stable court and the Hall. The surrounding park and gardens are listed in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
