Description
Turberfield is a house located in Sampford Peverell, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble with stone rubble stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, topped by a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main block facing north and set back slightly from the road. It features a three-room layout, with two rooms on the left and one on the right of a central entrance hall that contains the main staircase. The outer rooms have end stacks, while the third room has a rear lateral stack. At the rear of the right end, there is a lower service block that projects at right angles and has a two-room plan with an axial stack between.
The exterior is symmetrical with a five-window front, featuring 16-pane sash windows, except for a 12-pane sash window above the front doorway at first floor level. The entrance includes a six-panel door, a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a flat-roofed timber porch supported by panelled square section posts and a plain entablature. The roof is hipped at both ends. The rear block has 19th and 20th-century casements, most of which have glazing bars; the oldest window, located at first floor level on the western side, contains rectangular panes of leaded glass. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is believed to retain a significant amount of original joinery and other details.
