Description

This is a mid-19th century house, built using the shell of an earlier building. It is located on Chains Road, Sampford Peverell, facing northwest. The external walls are plastered cob, set on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a slate roof. The house has a three-room layout and two storeys. The front has a regular, though not symmetrical, facade with four 16-pane sash windows. The front door, positioned slightly left of centre, is a part-glazed four-panel door within a gabled, simply ornamented timber porch. The plasterwork on the facade is incised to resemble ashlar stonework. The roof is gable-ended. Internally, the house is now in poor condition and has lost some original joinery detail. A narrow strip of ground along the front is enclosed by 19th-century cast iron railings with ornate twisted stems and fleur-de-lys finials, with spear-headed gateposts and standards.
