Description

Hazelwood is a mid-19th century house situated on Romford Road, Pembury. It is likely originally constructed of brick, though now plastered and lightly incised to resemble ashlar. The house has plastered brick stacks and chimneyshafts with stucco cornices, and retains some original chimneypots. A peg-tile roof covers the structure, which is hipped at both ends.

The house is planned on a double-depth layout, facing north, with two rooms wide and end stacks. A central entrance hall contains the staircase. The main house is two storeys high, with a single-storey service wing projecting from the west end.

The symmetrical front elevation features three windows. The first floor windows are 12-pane sashes. The ground floor has French windows with margin panes on either side of a central doorway, which contains a four-panel door with a plain overlight. A tent-roofed veranda, with a shaped timber valance, extends across the front, supported on timber posts filled with ornamental trelliswork. A flat stucco band runs at first floor level, and the eaves are deeply boarded.

The interior has not been inspected, but original joinery and other detail is believed to remain.
