Description
Forge Cottage is a cottage, likely dating to the 18th century, situated adjacent to a former smithy in Ashill, Uffculme. It is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings, with a thatched roof. The cottage originally comprised two rooms, though it may have been intended as two separate one-room cottages from the outset. The entrance always led directly into the right-hand room. The cottage has an axial stack, primarily of stone, with brickwork to the shaft that heats the right-hand room. A secondary external stone stack with set-offs and a brick shaft heats the left-hand room. The front elevation presents an irregular two-window range; the first floor has a single 2-light and one 3-light casement window, the latter pegged. The ground floor features three windows, two of 2-lights and one of 3-lights. A thatched porch, boarded and partially glazed, has been added to the front. A lean-to extends to the rear. Inside the right-hand room, a chamfered axial ceiling beam with scroll stops is visible above the fireplace. A blocked fireplace, which retains a bake oven and a chamfered lintel with scroll stops, is also present. A small cupboard with a fielded panel door, formerly fitted with butterfly hinges, is set into the front wall of this room.
