Description
No. 4 The Square is a cottage dating from the late 16th or 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of colourwashed red brick, partly timber framed and rendered, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring a brick ridge stack. The gable faces the street. The building has two storeys, with a 3/3 sash window on the first floor above a similar window below, both with cambered lintels. There is a door to the left, and on the right side, there are a 2-light and a 3-light centre-opening casement window, the latter equipped with shutters. The first floor, although rendered, appears to consist of one long bay of close-studded timber framing. At the rear, there is a 3-light casement window above a one-storey extension with a plain tile roof and an end stack, along with another 3-light centre-opening casement with shutters. Behind this extension is a similar further outhouse extension featuring a 1-light window. Inside, the first floor reveals visible wall posts, tie beam trusses supporting a single purlin roof, some close studding (reportedly with wattle and daub nogging), and a newel staircase. It has been suggested that this cottage may be the cross wing of an otherwise demolished medieval house.
