Description
This linhay, dating from the mid-17th century, is located approximately 20 metres west of Widhayes Farmhouse in Uplowman. It is constructed from local stone rubble and features a corrugated iron roof, which was originally thatch. The linhay has 11 open bays and is oriented roughly north-south, facing the farm courtyard to the east.
The crossbeams that support the hayloft floor are tusk-tenoned into full-height front posts, which rest on stone pads, following Alcock's linhay Type Tl design. The oak beams and posts are chamfered and include scroll stops. The posts are arranged in a hammer beam style to support the outer principals of the A-frame truss roof, which has pegged lap-jointed collars. The roof is hipped at both ends.
The high-quality finish of this linhay sets it apart from most other similar structures in Devon. It is also part of a group with Widhayes Farmhouse and the other farm buildings in the area.
