Description

Milestone on the Grand Western Canal, dating from around 1814. This simple stone features the Roman numeral III, indicating that it is three miles from Tiverton, the terminal point of the canal. There are relatively few milestones left along this part of the canal. The Grand Western Canal was created under an Act of 1796, and the section in Halberton was finished in 1814.
