Description
This linhay, dating from the 17th century, is located approximately 10 metres south-west of Lower Chilverton. It is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings and features a corrugated iron roof. Originally, the linhay was open-fronted and included cowstalls with a hayloft or tallet above, facing the farmyard to the east. It consists of six bays of Alcock's Type T1. The full-height front posts support the roughly-finished crossbeams and the original roof trusses, which are A-frames with pegged lap-jointed collars. The roof is hipped at both ends, and many of the timbers display inscribed Roman numeral carpenter's assembly marks. Currently, the stalls have vertical boarding across the front. This linhay is part of an attractive group of farm buildings that includes a nearby barn and farmhouse.
