Description
This linhay, located approximately 80 metres east of Falkedon Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th to early 18th century. It is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings and features a thatched roof. Originally open-fronted, the linhay, which still has its tallet or hayloft open, faces north and is built across and terraced into the hillside. It consists of six bays, with the tallet/hayloft supported by a series of roughly finished crossbeams that rest on monolithic granite posts at the front. Each crossbeam has an oak post that rises through the tallet/hayloft, curving at the top and lap-jointed onto the outer principal of an A-frame truss, which has a pegged lap-jointed collar. The left end features a true cruck. This linhay is of Alcock's linhay type S2 and has a gable-ended roof. Near the centre at the back, there is a hayloft loading hatch with an old, possibly original, oak frame, allowing for loading from the terrace. Together with a nearby barn, this linhay represents a rare example of traditional thatched Devon farm buildings and is notably well-preserved.
