Description

Numbers 1-6 form a terrace of six houses dating from the 1840s and 1850s. The houses are built with a solid wall construction, rendered with stucco, and have brick chimney stacks. They are topped with natural slate roofs and feature cast-iron rainwater goods.

The layout is typical, with a double-depth plan, heated by stacks on the right-hand side, and a staircase located behind the front door. Each house has a two-bay fronted façade, two storeys high, plus basement, kitchen, and attic rooms in some cases. Deep eaves are supported on moulded brackets, and there's an eaves band running along the top. The front doors, on the left-hand side, have six vertical panels, with some panels replaced by glazing. To the right are tall transomed French windows. The first floor has a twelve-pane sash window above the front door and a sixteen-pane sash window to the right. There are three gabled attic dormer windows to the main range. The left return wall of Number 1 is of painted rubble and includes a twelve-pane attic sash window, as well as sixteen-pane sash windows at the first and ground-floor levels. A continuous verandah, with two bays per house, is supported on cast-iron Chinese Chippendale trellis panels.

Inside Number 5, the owner has reported the survival of some original wooden chimney pieces with cast-iron grates, and stick balusters in some of the houses.

A bull-nosed brick front wall runs along the street. The terrace includes a garden wall to Number 1.
