Description
This is a mid-19th century terrace of four symmetrical houses. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with three windows at the front. The roofs are slated, with mansard design. Number 1 has three dormers with pediments, while numbers 2 to 4 each have two square dormers. The houses are built of multicoloured stock brick, with a stucco frieze, a cornice featuring scrolled brackets, and a blocking course. Numbers 1 and 4 project slightly forward, accentuated by stuccoed quoins. The basement areas are stuccoed. Windows are topped with gauged brick arches; the ground floor windows have round arches, while those above are flat-headed. Second-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, some of which have been altered. First-floor windows are long casements that open onto full-width balconies: Number 1’s balcony features renewed stucco balustrading, while numbers 2 to 4 have cast iron railings supported by stucco posts. Ground-floor windows are sash windows; all but Number 3 retain their original glazing bars. Stuccoed keystones and impost blocks feature above the windows, along with stuccoed panels set beneath. The entrances are accessed by four or five steps leading to six-panel doors, with the smaller panels in the middle. Number 1 has a later door of six equal panels. All doors are set beneath cornice heads and plain fanlights, which are themselves arched with keystones and impost blocks. Each door is surrounded by a patch of banded rusticated stucco. Cast iron spearhead area railings and cast iron band railings are also present. The south return of Number 1 includes a chimney on the left and three closely spaced windows on each floor to the right. A projecting brick entrance extension is positioned on the right.
