Description
This is a barn located immediately south of Burrow Hill Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century and extended in the 19th century. It is built of unrendered cob on a stone rubble plinth and features a thatched roof with half-hipped ends. The barn has a three-bay layout with double doors at the front leading to a central threshing bay. The eastern bay was partitioned off later, and a floor was inserted, while a single-storey stone range was added to the rear of the eastern bay.
The north front has a central doorway to the threshing bay, which has a chamfered frame and plank double doors, with thatched eaves above forming a canopy. To the left of this doorway is a smaller doorway with a plank door. The rear side is weatherboarded on the left, featuring a central doorway with plank doors and a stone rubble wing on the right, topped with a thatched gable-ended roof.
Inside, the barn retains a complete three-bay roof supported by two jointed cruck trusses, with the eastern truss featuring a dovetail lapped collar and a later partition. It has two tiers of trenched purlins and a diagonally trenched ridgepiece, with the common rafters intact. There is also a later loft floor in the eastern bay. This barn is a fine example of an unaltered 17th-century cob barn, showcasing its original roof structure.
