Description

Knightstone is a Grade I listed building located on Knightstone Road, dating from the 14th century and later. This two-storey stone structure faces west and features two gabled wings, with a two-storey porch attached to the right wing. To the right, there is an extension with rendered walls that is believed to contain parts of an old chapel, for which a licence was granted by Bishop Brantingham in 1381. The wall includes a blank two-light window with old oak mullions and trefoil heads. Above the porch, there is a date stone inscribed with the initials of Gideon Sharman and his wife, dated 1563. The house was purchased by Gideon's father and was previously owned by Thomas Grey, Marquis of Dorset, whose wife constructed the Dorset aisle in the church and was the grandmother of Lady Jane Grey.

To the left of the porch are two large nine-light stone mullion transom windows that illuminate a large hall adjacent to the passage. The interior features a fine timbered roof and a deep plaster frieze adorned with grotesque figures. There are two stone four-centred doorways on the north wall. A passage, which contains two old doors, leads through the house. At the rear, there are two long wings, one of which has pigeon holes with alighting perches. The house has been recently and carefully restored, showcasing a fine example of a 16th-century mansion, with many original features still intact.
