Description

This is a mid-17th century threshing barn located approximately 40 metres east of Hayne Farmhouse. It features exposed cob on low rubble footings and has a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatch. The barn has gable ends and faces east, with identical designs on both sides, including large opposing central doorways leading to the threshing floors. These doorways are flanked by short projecting midstrey walls, and the roof extends down to create a small hood over the doorways. There are holes above the doorway lintel that suggest the presence of a larger hood in the past, possibly for a date plaque, although its function is unknown. The doors are made of oak and may be original. Each door is flanked by two ventilators, and each gable end wall contains two ventilators, with a third in the gable.

Inside, the barn is open from the ground to the roof and retains its original timber threshing floor. The original four-bay roof is particularly interesting, featuring A-frame trusses with halvings for missing dovetail pegged lap-jointed collars. Near the apex, secondary collars are mortised, tenoned, and pegged to the principal rafters. The principals are reused from presumably 16th-century side-pegged jointed cruck trusses and have been reset upside down. They contain mortises for original threaded purlins but were adapted for trenched purlins upon reuse. This barn appears to have been built around the same time as Hayne Farmhouse, and the timbers likely come from an earlier farmhouse. It is notably complete for its age and contributes to an attractive group with the farmhouse, stable, and another barn nearby.
