Description
Hembercombe Cottage is a small estate cottage, likely built in the late 17th or 18th century, with some renovations in the 20th century. It features creamwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and a thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at both ends, and hipped at the right end of an addition. The building has end stacks with red brick shafts.
The plan consists of a single depth layout, two rooms wide, with a central entrance and a single-storey addition on the right end. There is also a rear outshut that likely post-dates the main structure.
Located on the outskirts of Broadhembury village, the cottage is two storeys tall and has a slightly asymmetrical front with two windows. The central porch, which is either 20th or 19th century, has a gabled roof, a segmental arched outer doorway, and a 20th-century plank and stud front door. The ground floor features a probable 19th-century two-light small-pane timber casement window on the left and a three-light 20th-century timber replacement window with small panes on the right. The first floor has two gabled dormers with 19th or 20th-century small-pane timber casements, and there is a two-light small-pane casement in the right end addition.
The interior has not been inspected but is reported to be plain. Hembercombe Cottage is part of a group of small houses and cottages along the lane leading to Broadhembury Common, likely serving as a commoner's cottage.
