Description

Hembercombe West and Tower View, also known as Hembercombe, is a house that has been divided into two estate cottages. It likely dates from the 18th century, with renovations from the 20th century. The building features creamwashed rendered cob and stone, topped with a thatched roof that has a plain ridge, hipped at the right end and gabled at the left end. There are axial and end stacks with modern brick shafts.

The plan is single depth, four rooms wide, with a rear center tiled outshut. Most of the partitions in Hembercombe East appear to be from the 20th century, while Hembercombe West was not inspected internally at the time of the survey in 1987.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical window front, featuring a 2:3 arrangement, with Hembercombe West on the left and a buttress at the junction between the two cottages. There are gabled porches with segmental arched outer doorways and 19th or 20th century plank front doors. Hembercombe West has 2- and 3-light timber casements with glazing bars from the 19th or 20th century, while Hembercombe East has 20th century casements with square leaded panes.

Inside, Hembercombe East is largely modernized, with two roughly-finished exposed crossbeams, one of which is slightly chambered. The roof structure, though the apex was not inspected, likely dates from the 18th or 19th century, as the visible principal rafters in Hembercombe East are straight. This building is part of a group of small houses and cottages located on the lane to Broadhembury Common.
