Description
Generals Cottage and Ivy Cottage are two adjoining estate cottages, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, with a 19th century rear wing added to Ivy Cottage and 20th century renovations. They are constructed of creamwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, with the rear wing of Ivy Cottage made of stone. The cottages have a thatched roof featuring a plain ridge, gabled at the left end, hipped at the right end, and half-hipped over the rear wing, with an axial stack located at the rear of the ridge.
The cottages are designed in an L plan, with a single depth south-facing main range and a rear right wing at right angles to Ivy Cottage. They are two storeys high and have an asymmetrical three-window front. Generals Cottage, on the left, features a 19th or 20th century plank front door beneath a thatched porch canopy. The eaves are eyebrowed over a first floor 20th century two-light window with square leaded panes, and there is a 20th century two-light casement with square leaded panes to the right of the front door. Ivy Cottage, on the right, has two first floor 20th century two-light casements, one made of timber with glazing bars and the other with square leaded panes. The right side of Ivy Cottage includes a plank door with a slated porch hood and a 19th or 20th century two-light timber casement with glazing bars.
The interior of Ivy Cottage was inspected, revealing a front room with an exposed crossbeam and joists, which are likely 20th century replacements. The roof was not inspected but may hold interest. These cottages are part of an outstanding estate village known for its cob and thatch architecture.
