Description
Bridge House is an estate house dating from the 17th century or earlier. It features creamwashed rendered cob on stone footings and a thatched roof with a plain ridge, hipped at the right end and half-hipped at the left end. There is a rendered axial stack and a front left stack with a brick shaft. The plan details are unclear as the interior was not inspected, but it is likely a single-depth structure that is three rooms wide, with a baffle entry against the axial stack between the center and right-hand rooms. The left-hand room is heated from a lateral stack at the front, and there is a single-storey thatched outbuilding adjoining at the right end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, plus two windows on the outbuilding. There is a gabled porch to the right of center, although the door has been converted to a window. The windows are 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, consisting of two and three lights. The outbuilding includes a door, a three-light casement, and a loft door. The left return wall of the main block is thin, suggesting that it may have been rebuilt. The interior was not accessible during the survey, but it may be of interest, and an inspection could lead to a revision of the suggested dating. The building occupies a crucial position at the west end of the village.
