Description

Westaway is a house with late medieval origins, and a rear wing which was undergoing remodelling when surveyed in 1987. The house is likely built of cob on stone rubble footings, with a thatched roof and a ridge stack on the right end of the main range, and an axial stack to the wing. The approximate L-shaped plan suggests that the main range, facing the road, was truncated at the left end, connecting to the rear left wing at a right angle. The end of the rear wing was previously a single-storey carpenter’s shop, being converted into a two-storey block at the time of the survey. The interior was not inspected, but is likely to be of interest. The exterior has an asymmetrical 1:1 window frontage, with a single ground floor two-light casement, probably dating to the 19th or 20th century, and a first floor two-light casement to the left. There is a ground floor and first floor window to the return wall where the range is set back. The left return (the wing) features a 19th-century recessed door, and a first floor three-light casement with square leaded panes. Other windows are 2-, 3- and 4-light, dating to the 20th century with glazing bars. Thatchers describe the main roof as sooted. It is located at the west end of an outstanding cob and thatch village.
