Description

Thatchers Cottage is a small cottage, probably from the 18th century, with renovations from the 20th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and a thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at both ends. The left end has a stack with a modern brick chimney. The building has a single depth range, likely originally divided into a heated kitchen/living room on the left and an unheated service room on the right, which has been significantly repartitioned in the 20th century. There is a single-storey addition at the right end from the 20th century, and another single-storey addition at the left end with a pantile roof and an entrance on the right side.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, featuring eyebrowed thatch over two first-floor windows. The ground floor has three windows, all of which are 20th-century small-pane timber casements. A modern porch with a first-floor projection is located at the right end, leading to a 20th-century front door. The interior has been modernized. The cottage is included for its group value with a collection of small houses and cottages at Hembercombe on the lane leading to Broadhembury Common and is easily visible from Broadhembury village, contributing to the character of this outstanding unspoiled estate village.
