Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage, likely dating to the 18th century, with a 20th-century addition and significant renovations in progress in 1985. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, with a thatched roof gabled at the left end. A left-hand stack serves the property, and a rear wing is built of concrete block, also with a thatched roof. The cottage was said to have originally been part of three properties, possibly starting as a single-cell cottage on the left, with the right-hand end being one half of a two-cell cottage. The current layout is of single depth, with a rear wing. Before the 1985 renovations, the main range comprised a living room/kitchen to the left and a smaller, unheated room to the right, with a partition subsequently removed. The cottage has two storeys and a symmetrical two-window front, featuring a 20th-century thatched porch in the center. A 20th-century casement window is on the left of the ground floor; to the right, a six-light fixed window, likely from the 19th century. A single first-floor window above the porch is a three-light casement with six panes per light, also probably 19th century. The interior ground floor has large, rough cross beams and a fireplace with stone rubble jambs, an unmoulded lintel, and a cloam oven with a clay lid. Previous stairs were located within a rear outshut that has been removed, and 20th-century stairs have been added to the main range. A blocked doorway on the right-hand wall indicates a former access to the adjacent property. The cottage occupies a prominent corner site within the village and holds group value alongside the adjacent cottage and Numbers 1 and 2 Gridley Corner.
