Description

Cottage, dating to circa 1800, with a 20th-century addition to the rear. The walls are primarily cob on stone rubble footings, colourwashed and rendered, with a stone rubble gable end. The roof is thatched, gabled at the right end, and features a right-end stack with a brick shaft. Originally part of a pair of cottages that were formerly three properties; the right-hand end of No. 2 may have been a single-cell cottage, while the left-hand end was likely one half of a two-cell cottage. The current layout is a single-depth plan, two rooms wide, with the larger, heated room to the right, and the front door to the left, sheltered by a sloping corrugated asbestos roof. It’s two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the first-floor window to the right. The windows are 19th-century two-light casements, each with six panes. Inside, the right-hand room has a 20th-century grate and one original roughly-chamfered cross beam. The ceiling has been raised, and new oak joists have been inserted. While roofspace access wasn’t available during the 1985 survey, the principal rafters suggest the original roof trusses remain. An old photograph owned by the current owner shows No. 2 and the neighboring property, Gridley Corner, as three separate properties. It stands as one of a group of thatched cottages situated at Gridley Corner.
