Description
Blackmores, sometimes known as Pennywain, is a small estate house that possibly dates back to the 17th century but has undergone alterations since then. The building is creamwashed and rendered, likely made of cob on stone rubble, and features a thatched roof with a plain ridge and gabled ends. It has a rear lateral stack and a stack at the right end. The plan suggests a single depth layout, probably two rooms wide. A 17th-century moulded doorframe at the left end may have been relocated, indicating that the house might have originally extended further to the left. The current structure may represent the passage, hall, and inner of a three-room and passage plan house, with the lower end reduced to an outshut. The present front door is located to the right of the 17th-century doorframe.
The exterior consists of two storeys, featuring a 20th-century plank front door to the left of centre, which is sheltered by a gabled porch hood, and the 17th-century moulded doorframe to the left. There are two three-light timber casement windows on the ground floor, possibly from the 19th century, with small panes, and three first-floor three-light timber casements from the 19th or 20th century, which include glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have no exposed carpentry. The house is set forward but adjacent to Vicarage Cottage, located at the east end of a notable estate village characterized by cob and thatch.
