Description

The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage that has been divided into two houses. It was remodeled in 1807, as indicated by a datestone, and retains traces of an earlier building at the rear. The structure is whitewashed and rendered, featuring a hipped slate roof with deep eaves supported by paired eaves brackets, and stacks with rendered shafts. The building has a double depth plan, two rooms wide, with a central entrance leading into a stair hall and rear service rooms. Changes in floor level and irregularities at the back suggest that the house was originally built before the 19th century and was thoroughly remodeled in 1807.

The exterior is two storeys high with an almost symmetrical five-window front, although there are minor variations among the windows. The central entrance features an early 19th-century recessed panelled door with a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a rounded outer arch. Above the front door is the datestone from 1807 with the initials E.D. The house has a complete set of early 19th-century small-pane timber sash windows, with those on the right side featuring margin panes. The right return (No. 2) has a recessed front door with an overlight, flanked by small-pane timber windows. The rear and side elevations display a mixture of timber sashes and casements, mostly from the 19th century.

Inside No. 1, early 19th-century joinery is preserved, including shutters, panelled doors, cornices, two marble chimney-pieces, and a well-crafted staircase with stick balusters in the first flight and a ramped handrail. The two first-floor flights feature turned balusters, and the stair is illuminated by a lantern.
