Description
The Stores is a house and shop built between 1870 and 1871. It features rendered red sandstone beneath a gabled-end red-slate roof. This building marks the end of the Newbuildings sequence at the village. It consists of a range and a cross-wing, with two storeys and an attic, and has axial stacks with brick shafts. The upper floor has 2-light casement windows, while the lower floor includes sash windows, large shop windows, and a side entrance. There is an angle formed by a former offset entrance, with the first floor corbelled out above. The Stores is part of a long sequence of eight blocks of houses constructed to replace dwellings that were destroyed in the Broadclyst fire of 1870. These houses are viewed as a group and share basic features, although each unit is carefully varied.
