Description
Nos. 10, 11, and 12 Newbuildings is a block of houses built between 1870 and 1871. The houses are made of rendered red sandstone and feature a gabled-end roof covered with synthetic red tiles. The rear extensions, which are unrendered sandstone, contain workshops and privies. The building has two storeys with attics and axial stacks with brick shafts.
The front of the block has a central projection with a separate gable, and the eaves, which include a fascia, are slightly lower than those of the flanking sections. Each floor of the central projection has two sash windows, while the main range has one window per floor, with each window being a two-light design with six panes per light. There is also one two-light casement window in the gable walls at either end. All sash and casement windows are made of timber and are set under shallow window arches.
This block is part of a longer sequence of eight blocks of houses that were constructed to replace dwellings destroyed in the Broadclyst fire of 1870. While the houses share basic features, each unit is carefully varied, contributing to the overall character of the group.
