Description
Nos. 7, 8, and 9 Newbuildings is a block of houses built between 1870 and 1871. The buildings are made of rendered red sandstone and feature a gabled-end roof covered with synthetic red tiles. The rear extensions, which are unrendered sandstone, contain a workshop and privies. The structure is two storeys high with attics and has axial stacks with brick shafts.
The front of the building has a central projection with a separate gable, and the eaves, which include a fascia, are slightly lower than those of the flanking sections. Each floor of the central projection has two sash windows, while the main range has one two-light window with six panes per light on each floor. There are also two-light casement windows in the gable walls at either end. All windows, whether sash or casement, are made of timber and are set beneath shallow window arches.
A contemporary latticed veranda with metal supports and an iron roof of concave profile is attached to the front. There are small side porches at each end; the right porch has a tiled roof, while the left porch features timber sides and a slated roof. The block is connected by a wall to Nos. 10-12. This building is part of a longer sequence of eight blocks constructed in 1870 to replace homes that were destroyed in the Broadclyst fire of that year. The houses share basic features but are also carefully varied from one another.
