Description

This is a block of three houses, numbers 4, 5, and 6 Newbuildings, built between 1870 and 1871. They were constructed as part of a larger development of eight blocks to replace dwellings lost in the Broadclyst fire of 1870. The front of the block is faced with rendered red sandstone, while the rear extensions, which contain workshops and privies, are of unrendered sandstone. The roofs are gabled and covered with synthetic red tiles. The houses are two storeys high with attics, and have axial chimney stacks with brick shafts.

The central section of the block is a separately gabled projection with two windows to each floor in the gable wall, all with 2-light casement windows. The main range to either side has one window to each floor, also 2-light with 6 panes per light, along with sashes. There is a single 2-light casement window to the gable wells at both ends. All windows are timber framed and set under shallow window arches. The eaves have a fascia, and are slightly lower than those of the flanking range. A single-storey wing with 20th-century windows connects the block to numbers 7–9. The houses are considered as a group, sharing common features but also exhibiting deliberate variation between each individual unit.
