Description
Burrough's Almshouses are a set of almshouses founded and endowed in 1605 by Henry Burroughs for 12 elderly individuals. The building was largely rebuilt in 1833, although it appears to incorporate some older materials. It is constructed of red sandstone with volcanic trap dressing and features a gabled-end slate roof. The structure is a single-storey range of rooms that extends along Church Lane, with a tall plinth and 14 single-light, square-headed windows set high in the walls. These windows have chamfered stone surrounds and latticed panes, with 7 windows on each side of a central entrance that is accessed through an arch. There are 6 axial stone stacks with brick shafts. The rear of the building has windows that are all 3-light, featuring completely renewed concrete ovolo moulded jambs and mullions.
