Description
House. Dating from the 16th or early 17th century, it was substantially remodelled and enlarged in the early 19th century. The main range is of cob construction, with a stone plinth, rendered finish, and a gabled-end slate roof featuring sprocketted eaves and a box gutter supported by shaped brackets. A rear wing, built of stone, rendered and with a hipped slate roof, was added around 1840. There are two end stacks and an axial stack, all rendered and topped with moulded caps. The front has a four-window arrangement. Three upper windows and two ground-floor windows have 19th-century tripartite hornless sash windows, with side panels containing two 2-pane sashes and a central 6-pane light. A sash window above the front door contains two 6-pane sashes. The door is panelled and set within a semi-circular arch, positioned right of centre. Rusticated quoining is present. Traces of the earlier house remain in the right-hand room, including a large end fireplace with an unchamfered timber lintel, stone jambs, and a blocked back oven. A newel staircase with heavy wooden treads and risers is also present. A seven-bay plank and muntin screen, chamfered and stopped with run-out stops to within 2 feet of the ground level (where a horizontal line indicates a former bench fixture), divides the room from the present hall, which probably lies to the right of the original passage. Good early 19th-century panelled doors and fittings are present, along with two later 19th-century polished limestone fire surrounds in the rear wing. The roof has early 19th-century collar trusses with sawn timbers. A tall brick entrance pier with a moulded stone cap remains to the left.
