Description

This building, known as College, is a house that dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with later modifications. It is constructed of cob on a stone plinth, rendered, and features a gabled-end wheat-reed thatch roof. Originally, it had a three-room, cross passage layout, with the higher end to the right of the passage, which no longer exists. This end is marked externally by a higher roof ridge and has a smoke-blackened medieval roof. The inner room was later heated by an external end stack, while the hall was heated by an external front lateral stack, both with brick shafts that have been rebuilt with later bricks. The lower end, which has an internal end stack, was likely always two storeys high and includes a large projecting newel stair turret. The building is now two storeys throughout.

The front of the house features two 2-light windows on the ground floor and two 2-light windows on the first floor, all under eyebrow eaves, with boarded gables. The windows are timber casements with three panes each and are from the 20th century. To the right of the front stack are two timber windows, each with three lights, matching those on the left at the first floor. The left gable end has one blocked ground-floor light from the early 19th century, while the right end has no windows. The rear of the building includes one 2-light window at ground floor level, one above under eyebrow eaves (with an unboarded gable), and another tiny first-floor window. The rear door does not align with the front door.

Inside, the building has been considerably altered, but the inner room retains a chamfered beam with a step stop and is separated from the hall by a plank and muntin screen, with chamfered muntins and an upper horizontal beam featuring mural decoration of a painted black floral design. The roof over the higher end has smoke-blackened principals and rafters, with trusses that may be jointed crucks, and the apex is morticed and side pegged, featuring a ridge piece.
