Description

Hackworthy Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th century and later. The walls are of cob, with a stone plinth and a rendered finish. The roof is thatched, half-hipped on the left and gabled at the right end, with a right-end dormer window. A prominent front dormer window, now flush with the right-hand side of the building, includes a large projecting bake-oven with a tile roof and one offset. Four windows are located on the ground floor, all dating from the 19th century, and are 2-light timber casements with six panes to each light. The first floor has three windows; one to the left is level with the ground floor window, while the others on the right are from the 18th century, consisting of one 2-light and one 3-light timber casements, each with eight panes. No original features are visible at ground floor level. The interior has not been inspected, but reports indicate the survival of six roof trusses, likely consisting of jointed cruck timbers. The building has group value in terms of its vernacular architectural style.
