Description

Primrose Cottage is a house located on The Green in Whimple, dating back to the 17th century, with possible earlier origins. It has a late 19th-century extension and was modernized with another extension in 1976. The older part of the cottage is constructed from plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The roof is thatched, while the 19th-century extension has a slate roof.

The 17th-century section of the cottage faces southwest and appears to have a two or three-room layout with gable-end stacks, one of which projects from the southeast. The rear wall bulges in the center, suggesting the presence of a stair turret. A 19th-century one-room block extends at right angles from the rear of the left end and features a gable-end stack. A 20th-century extension projects forward from the left end at the first-floor level, with an open carport below. The cottage is two storeys high and has a 20th-century conservatory alongside the rear block.

The rear block includes a likely late 19th-century six-pane sash window with a flat stucco architrave and eaves cornice, while the other windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The front of the main block has a roughly central doorway that contains a 20th-century panelled door behind a contemporary gabled porch. The roof of the main block is gable-ended.

Although the interior was not available for inspection, it is reported to include original carpentry details, including a jointed cruck truss roof. The Green features a charming group of small thatch-roofed houses.
