Description
The former indoor riding school, located 10 metres south-west of Nutwell Home Farm, is now used as a grain store. It was built around 1800, likely by William Phillips for the 2nd Lord Heathfield, possibly with input from S P Cockerell, the architect of Nutwell Court. The building is constructed of brick and features a gabled end roof, which is now covered with corrugated asbestos. Internally, it provides a vast single space measuring 46 metres by 19 metres, totaling 874 square metres.
On the exterior, the building has overhanging eaves that are combined with a cornice of lath and plaster to create a pediment at the gable, which includes a large lunette with radial glazing bars. Flanking this are two large cast iron lunettes and three occuli with brick surrounds, also featuring cast-iron radial glazing bars. The entrance is located on the west side and has an altered doorway. Inside, the impressive single-span roof consists of 19 bays, with roof trusses that include principal rafters, a collar, segmental arch-braces in five sections, a king post, and upper struts set diagonally, along with a passing brace extending from the wall plates to the king post.
