Description
The former stables to the north-west of Heaton Hall, built in 1777 by Samuel Wyatt, is a stable block constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and hipped slate roofs. The building has an extended U-shaped plan, featuring a long main range with receding wings. It is two storeys high, with a symmetrical arrangement of windows in a 1:3:3:3:1 pattern.
The central entrance block is two storeys tall and features a giant round-headed entrance arch, with the upper portion filled by a Diocletian window. This entrance is flanked by pedimented bays that project slightly forward, each having a first-floor band, 12-pane windows at the ground floor, and low 6-pane windows above. The windows are mostly tilting casements, except for the fixed window to the right at ground floor. The roof is topped with an octagonal clock turret.
The single-storey side ranges have similar 12-pane tilting casements. The two-storey wings, which served as coach houses, feature giant round-headed arches that contain 20th-century double doors and Diocletian windows above. There is a through-passage with segmental-headed doorways on each side, both fitted with fielded panel double doors and flanked by round-headed 12-pane sashed windows. The rear of the building resembles the front, although the south range has been altered by the insertion of a doorway and the addition of a fire escape. The wings continue as open-fronted cart sheds.
