Description
The West Hill Memorial Cross is located on a small triangular Green at the junction of School Lane and West Hill Road, marked at each corner by three granite boulders. The memorial is constructed from rough-hewn Dartmoor granite and features a Maltese cross atop a 2.5-meter tall tapering shaft, which is raised on a square plinth. This plinth is set on a two-stepped base, situated within a square area that is kerbed and gravelled.
The names and dedication are inscribed on the plinth using applied lead lettering. The dedication states, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ WEST HILL WHO DIED IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ (NAMES)." On the front face of the first step, it reads, "THEIR NAMES SHALL REMAIN FOREVER AND/ THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT." The first step also includes the dedication "1939 - 1945 (NAMES)."
