Description
The Cockfield War Memorial is located in a square enclosure on the village green south of Front Street. It is constructed from Kenmay granite and features a Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar atop a tapering, octagonal shaft. The cross shaft is supported by a square plinth, which stands on two steps; the upper step is made of granite with a chamfered riser at the front, while the lower step is made of sandstone.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH,/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US/ IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914 – 1918." Below this, the base bears the phrase "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The names of the men being commemorated are inscribed on the other three sides of the plinth. The dates "1939 1945" are noted on the front face of the upper step, with the names from the Second World War inscribed on the chamfered riser of the step. All inscriptions are made with applied metal lettering.
The memorial is surrounded by a low stone wall that is taller at each corner and features ornamental posts with chains in the central sections. The gate to the enclosure is located on the northern side.
