Description
Salston Hotel is a large red brick mansion built in the 19th century by William Hart Coleridge, who passed away in 1849. The main part of the hotel was constructed in the 19th century, while the west wing dates back to the 18th century and was restored after a fire. A house existed on this site as shown on Donn's map of 1765. There is also a later 19th-century east extension, which was reportedly built for the visit of the Princess of Teck.
The architecture of Salston Hotel is designed to resemble an Elizabethan mansion, featuring gables, finials, and a projecting porch. The building includes mullion windows with four-centred heads and tall clustered octagonal chimneys. It is primarily two storeys high, except for the west wing, which has an attic storey with dormer windows and a basement with red brick segmental vaulted cellars. The east extension contains a ground floor ballroom that features a carved stone fireplace originally from the King's School, which dates back to the 16th century or earlier, and was moved from the west wing, where plaster overmantel decoration still remains.
Salston Hotel, Salston Lodge, and the lodge opposite the entrance to Salston Hotel form a group.
