Description
The Town Mill and Circular Weir, located on Mill Street, were likely built around 1790, coinciding with the construction of the nearby Factory, on the site of earlier mills. The mill is a four-storey structure made of red brick and features a slate roof and casement windows. At the rear, where the leat runs, the gable end is adorned with a moulded stone finial. A notable feature is the "tumbling" weir, which consists of a large iron ring with a smaller ring inside it. Water from the leat that is not needed for the mill flows over the outer ring, and when that fills, it drains into the inner ring, which has a hole at the bottom that directs the water into the River Otter. Although the mill is no longer used for grinding, it retains an unusually large upright shaft and spur wheel. All the listed buildings on Mill Street are part of a group.
