Description

Bank Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, dating from 1677, which features the initials B above RR carved on the fireplace lintel. The building has a two-unit plan with a stack on the east gable end and stands two storeys tall. A staircase turret is located on the north side, which is enclosed by a later 18th-century two-storey extension, accompanied by a 19th-century lean-to with one window at the front. The walls are rendered cob, rebuilt in timber framing and brick above the first floor level at both the east and west ends. The roof is half hipped and thatched.

At the ground floor west end, there is an original three-light ovolo-mullioned window, which has been partly altered by a later doorway. The cottage also features 18th-century and 19th-century mullioned windows. The original entrance is on the north side, showcasing an ovolo frame and a boarded door with strap hinges; this frame and door were repositioned when the extension was constructed. The cob stack is built in red brick above roof level, and the fireplace is lined in red brick, featuring an ovolo-moulded lintel with a bracketed mantle above.

Inside, the staircase turret contains a 19th-century newel staircase, and the ceilings have chamfered beams with stopped ends. There are two pairs of jointed crucks, and a taller brick chimney stack is located at the junction of the west gable and the extension. A later 19th-century entrance is situated at the east end beside the stack, and there is an early 19th-century hidden entrance with a hipped slate roof at the west, which includes a braced door and a mullioned window.
