Description

Raleigh House is an 18th-century building with alterations, featuring two storeys and an attic. It is constructed of red brick and has a slate roof, with a stucco band at the first floor and a parapet. The house has three sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor and two ground floor windows with half-round heads, which are set under slightly projecting brick arches with reeded imposts. The door has a moulded arched architrave, with rusticated stone voussoirs and jambs that are painted. It includes a radial bar fanlight and a glazed margin around it, allowing space for a reeded door frame with narrow pilasters. The door itself is a six-panel design with sunk upper panels and panelled reveals, topped with a sculptured head keystone. There are ornamental cast iron front railings.

To the east, there is a two-storey wing that is roughcast and features two first-floor casement windows, one of which retains its glazing bars. The roof is also slate. Raleigh House is located on part of the site of a house where Sir Walter lived, which was in decay by the end of the 18th century, with the remainder burned down in a fire in 1805. Edward Davy was born at Raleigh House in 1806, and in 1840, his machines for "Telegraphic Communication" were brought to Ottery and stored at the house for several years.
