Description
The Warden's House, located on the south side of The College, dates back to 1481 and is a fragment of the former monastic buildings, though it was mainly reconstructed in the 18th century. This two-storey structure features roughcast walls, with the south face made of stone and red brick dressings around a three-light sash window on the first floor, which includes glazing bars. Originally, the house was larger, with two wings facing south, but little of this remains today, and it has been divided into two dwellings.
Inside the east room on the ground floor, there is an Adam style mantel, pine panelling painted brown, and a well-crafted moulded cornice. Another room contains a cupboard with an arched top, and a passage features a glazed fanlight that was likely once an exterior element. The other dwelling includes a notable 17th-century staircase and a panelled powder closet. An early 13th-century stone fireplace has been removed and reset in the Chanter's House. The Warden's House is prominently positioned near St Mary's Church.
