Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building, consecrated by Bishop Bronescombe in 1260. It underwent alterations and additions by Bishop Grandison around 1330. The church is primarily in the Early English style and is built similarly to Exeter Cathedral, featuring two towers above the transepts. It includes a nave, aisles, and a Lady Chapel. The groining is from a later period, and the north aisle is in the Perpendicular style. The church boasts a richly decorated roof with pendants and contains some fine tombs. It served as a Collegiate Church from 1337 until its dissolution in 1545. The structure is made of grey stone and underwent significant restoration in the mid-19th century by Butterfield and others.
